The Rail Systems Integration Partner (RSIP)
Customer: Network Rail
The Rail Systems Integration Partner (RSIP) framework is a key initiative between Network Rail and its supply partners, designed to support the East Coast Digital Programme’s (ECDP) landmark digital transformation initiative on the East Coast Main Line. Asset Insights worked with the Network Rail team and other stakeholders to create a digital solution for managing all commissions awarded under the Framework throughout their full contract lifecycles.
The challenge
Prior to the development of the RSIP Portal, the commissioning process within the framework was fragmented, relying on various spreadsheets and documents for coordination. The volume of paperwork and varying administration standards added complexity, increasing the potential for errors and requiring more manual effort. Tracking the status of contracts and changes was difficult, creating challenges with operational visibility. While the framework team had worked hard to create comprehensive user processes, adherence to these was inconsistent with key questions – such as who was responsible for specific tasks, what needed to be done and how long processes should take – often unclear.
These challenges highlighted the need for a more streamlined, transparent and efficient solution to manage commissioning and change management processes across the framework.
The Solution
In response to these challenges, Asset Insights partnered with the Network Rail team to create the RSIP Portal, a digital solution aimed at centralising and streamlining the commissioning and change management processes. The solution was developed using an agile approach, leveraging fortnightly sprints to deliver value to the client as quickly as possible, while maintaining flexibility for ongoing refinement.
Early in the development process, the RSIP team was given access to a live test environment, enabling them to carry out real-world testing throughout the development lifecycle and provide continual feedback for rapid resolution. A tailored implementation plan was created with the framework management team, enabling multi-disciplinary stakeholders across Network Rail and its partner organisations to be onboarded onto the solution with minimal disruption.
Asset Insights continues to work closely with the RSIP team to expand the portal’s functionality and aid the customer in realising further value from the solution.
Features and Benefits
The portal’s key features have brought numerous benefits to the RSIP team, including:
Collaborative workspace
A unified digital workspace, bringing together Network Rail, its partners and other stakeholders in one shared environment.
Streamlined approvals process
The approvals workflow is simplified and routed automatically, with real-time visibility into commission statuses and greater accountability.
Centralised data management
With all documents stored in a single location, the team has improved access to critical information, leading to more informed and timely decision-making.
Process-based workflows
The portal’s modular approach and tailored workflows replicate the team’s established processes. Automated data collection and form-filling save time and ensure consistency across the framework.
Digital change control
A robust change management feature allows for better control over project alterations, with every change captured and reviewed, ensuring changes are controlled and communicated effectively across the team.
